福鈴とは鈴は、縄文時代にクルミなどの木の実やマメを振ると、外殻や鞘の中で種子が動いて鳴ることに着想を得て作られた道具ともいわれています。
古来より鈴は魔(厄や邪気)を祓い福(良い気や人)を呼ぶと伝えられていたそうです。
縁起物として、茶室の床の間には新年らしく、福を呼ぶとして福鈴を飾ることがあります。
通常、（お神楽）浦安の舞で用いる鈴は、「鉾鈴」を正式とし、「神楽鈴」を代用してもよいこととなっているそうで、どちらの鈴にも柄の端には五尺から六尺の五色の鈴緒(五色布)が付けられるようです。
このうち「神楽鈴」は、小さい鈴を12個または15個つないで柄をつけたもので、歌舞伎舞踊の三番叟(さんばそう)などにも用いるようです。
小さな鈴を15(=3+5+7)個付けたものは、特に「七五三鈴」と呼ぶようです。（これは稲穂を模したものだそうで、五穀豊穣の祈願の意味があるようです）神道では、五色布は「青・赤・黄・白・黒」の順序となっていて、それぞれ「木・火・土・金・水」、「東・南・中央・西・北」に対応しているそうで、「土＝黄＝中央」が最も尊貴みたいです。
