落語の神様と後世に称される三遊亭圓朝が21歳のときに作った怪談噺の大作(全5話)を、名手、歌丸が5時間にわたって語った箱入り5枚組。もともと国立劇場で一年一話、5年がかりのペースで語り継いできたものを、2003年に横浜にぎわい座にて、5ヵ月で挑戦した集大成版の記録である。何しろ半端じゃない長丁場で、登場人物も多く、複雑に筋の入り組んだストーリーを、巧みな話術でわかりやすくひもといて聴かせる手腕は、さすがのひとこと。また、近年、語り手のいなくなった噺を復活させることに熱心な歌丸らしく、圓朝がやって以来、百数十年ぶりの復活とも言われる“其の五”「お熊の懺悔」を復活させている。それも、単に珍しいものだからではなく、登場人物の中で新吉とお賎に注目するからこその必然だと、筋道を立てている。信頼のおける語り手による至福の5時間だ。
