1956年から61年にかけてのミンガス「Atlantic Label」時代の演奏40曲を収録したＣＤ６枚組のボックスセット。
1956年の『Pithecanthropus Erectus』から、『The Clown』(57年)、『Blues & Roots』(59年)、『Mingus at Antibes』(60年)、『Tonight at Noon』(61年)、『Oh Yeah』(61年)までの6枚のリーダー・セッションに、テディ・チャールズ『Word From Bird』(58年)のサイドメン仕事(Disc1 M5～8)、未発表テイク(Disc3 M7～10)を収録。
演奏はレコーディング・デイト順に並べられ、1959年の「Blues & Roots」から4曲の未発表別テイクが収録された。
さらに75分にわたるアトランティック・レコードの創始者でありプロデューサーでもあるネスヒ・アーティガンとのインタビューが収録された。また添付収録 されたブックレットには、ミンガスの研究者やプロデューサーのエッセイが収録され、オリジナルの解説を完全収録、録音に関する完全ディスコグラフィー、さ らに貴重な写真も多数網羅されている。モダンジャズの歴史の中で年を経るごとにその輝きを増しているチャールズ・ミンガス。その主張を含んだ音楽がプロ デューサーの理解を経て、理想的なかたちで作品化された「Atlantic Label」での“暴れぶり”が楽しい。もちろん、収録の録音の中には、ミンガスの作品史上最もヘヴィーで最もアグレッシブな一枚「直立猿人」が含まれて いることはいうまでもない。
