1907年に、キューバのハヴァナに生まれたマチートは1930年代の後半にニューヨークに渡り、1940年代からアフロ・キューバン・オーケストラを率いて、ラテン音楽界に革命を起こしました。そんな彼のピークともいうべき1951～1952年に，米CBSに吹き込んだ楽曲をコンプリートに網羅したアルバムです。彼の音楽はアフロ・キューバン・ジャズと呼ばれディジー・ガレスピー、チャーリー・パーカー、スタン・ケントンなどジャズ・ミュージシャンと録音をするなどその影響力はラテンのみならずジャズにも及ぶラテンの巨人です。
