4人の新米警察官たちが、実習生として八里河(バーリーホー)派出所に配属された。採用試験は最下位だが、切れ者の李大為(リー・ダーウェイ/チャン・ルオユン扮)、殉職した父の意志を継ぎ警察官となった夏潔(シア・ジエ/バイ・ルー扮)、名門卒で法学修士号を取得したエリートの楊樹(ヤン・シュー/シュー・カイチョン扮)、農村から出てきた志の高い趙継偉(チャオ・ジーウェイ/チャオ・ルー扮)。彼らはそれぞれ、所長の王守一(ワン・ショウイ/ワン・ジンチュン扮)によって割り当てられた指導係と組む。彼らは、一筋縄ではいかない指導係に警察官としての心得を叩きこまれながら、派出所に持ち込まれる依頼や住民同士の小競り合いなど、様々な事件を通して職務を学んでいく。しかし、それぞれに正義感を持つ実習生たちは、時に指導係と真正面から衝突し、思い描いていた警察官としての理想と現実が大きくかけ離れていたことに気付く。決して甘くない日常に葛藤する李大為、夏潔、楊樹、趙継偉だが、立派な警察官になるため、互いに切磋琢磨し、そして指導係や所長たちに厳しくも温かく支えられながら、必死に壁を乗り越えていく。そんなある日、李大為と市民がもみ合っている映像がネットで拡散され、警察内部でも大きな問題になる。所長に事情を問われるも、なぜか李大為は口を開こうとはしないのだった…。
