デリック・L・カーターが放つ『The Unterschrift EP』は、彼の真骨頂ともいえる「シカゴの黒さ」と「ヨーロッパ的な洗練」の交差点に位置する作品だ。ミニマルに研ぎ澄まされたグルーヴの中に、ソウルフルな断片やジャジーなテクスチャーが忍び込み、ただのフロア・ツールに終わらない“人間味のあるハウス”を提示している。
リズムは乾いていながらしなやかで、低域のベースが身体を揺らし、上モノのきらめきが空間に余韻を残す。いわば「クラブの朝方」にぴったりな、重さと軽さを同時に孕んだバランス感覚がこのEPにはある。カーターのプレイに特徴的な“カットアップ的な編集感覚”も反映されており、どこか即興性すら感じさせる。
シカゴ・ハウスの源流を忘れないまま、90年代以降のハウスに必要だった洗練を先取りしていたと言えるだろう。無駄を削ぎ落とし、残された要素だけでグルーヴを成り立たせる――DJのためのハウスでありながら、聴き手の心にも沁みる一枚だ。
