ホルチン部首長の娘で、“幸運の星”の下に生まれた玉児(ユアル) その宿命ゆえ、彼女の行く手には過酷な運命が待ち構えていた―時は明代末期。後金のハン、ヌルハチは天下統一をなしえぬまま逝去。ヌルハチの後継者には第四子のホンタイジか 第十四子のドルゴンが有力だったが、ヌルハチの最期を看取ったホルチン部の首長の娘である玉児の証言により、 ホンタイジがハンを継承することになる。ホンタイジの正室はホルチン部の首長の妹、哲哲だった。玉児は、密かにホンタイジに 憧れを抱いていたが、玉児に“天下の母”になるとのお告げがあったことを知ったホンタイジから側室に迎えられる。 玉児に思いを寄せていたドルゴンは、ホンタイジを必ず超えてみせると誓うのだった。 一方、玉児には海蘭珠という異母姉妹がいた。 海蘭珠は母が使用人のためいつも日陰の身であり、周囲からは“不幸の星”の下に生まれたと疎んじられていた。 そんな海蘭珠は、玉児の母親の賽王奇雅から、恋人を死に追いやられ母親も殺されたため、復讐するべくホンタイジの 側室になることを受け入れる。海蘭珠が愛する人の側室になったことで大きなショックを受ける玉児だったが、 これは長きに渡る後宮での哀しい闘いの幕開けに過ぎなかった…。
